As ironic and fated as some Halloween deaths might appear, there have been many murders that have taken place during this time of year that many have said were completely shocking and unexpected. Almost as if the person who did the killings were temporarily possessed by evil and acted completely outside their character.

On October 31, 2004, Lauren M. noticed the security light come on outside the home she shared with Adriane Insogna and Leslie Ann Mazzara, and, despite her dog's warning growl, she dismissed it as probably just a cat. She heard other noises, but thought that one her of housemates had invited a boyfriend to go upstairs. The three housemates had given out Halloween candy that evening and had gone to bed around 10:30 p.m., Lauren in her first-floor bedroom in the back of the tract house, and the other two upstairs. Awakened at 2:00 a.m. by the sound of breaking glass, Lauren heard a struggle in the upstairs rooms. She jumped out of bed and stood listening for a moment near the doorway of her room. A voice cried out from upstairs.
"Please, God, help me! Somebody help me!" The voice was Adriane's.
Lauren then heard someone rushing down the stairway, and all she could think to do was escape out the back door, leaving her trapped in her fenced backyard. There she hid, listening, as the intruder jumped out the kitchen window in the front of the house and ran away. Adriane cried again for help, so Lauren went back inside to call 911. However, the cordless phone failed to work, and upstairs she found her friends lying face-down and just barely clinging to life. The floor was a bloody mess, and Adriane was behind her bed, bleeding badly and no longer able to speak. Leslie lay in a pile of clothing, unconscious, with wounds all over her upper body. Lauren realized she could not save them, and, afraid the intruder might return, she left again, getting into her car and using her cell phone to call 911. A police officer patrolling nearby arrived at the scene, but he was too late. The victims were both dead. News of the crime in the papers the following day, November 1, 2004, stunned area residents. The Napa Valley in Northern California is famous for its many wineries and unique beauty. A tourist destination for millions, it provided resorts, wine tours, and exquisite restaurants. It was not associated with violence, domestic or otherwise, and the Westside neighborhood where the double slaying occurred was considered quiet and safe. What no one knew was that the man they sought was mingling among the mourning relatives, consoling them and attending candlelight memorials. Yet it was not until August, nearly a year after the incident, that the police decided to release more information. To reporters they stated that the killer was probably a chain-smoker who had stood outside the house awaiting his opportunity. They revealed the brand of the cigarettes, thinking that someone would know a person who smoked it. Lauren recalled that Eric Copple, the husband of Adriane's best friend, Lily, had smoked. He had also been in the house on at least one occasion. She called the police to tell them. Three months after the murders, Lily married Copple, and Adriane's mother attended their wedding, reading scriptures in honor of her daughter. She was stunned when she learned Copple had been arrested. "I never felt he was dangerous," she said. "I never felt a sinister vibe from him." Copple's family had pressured him to turn himself in. From the phone calls left on his answering machine, he was already aware that the investigation had finally targeted him, and he allegedly left a suicide note admitting to the murders, which his brother found. - Tru TV
Halloween 1828: The Last Murder
On Halloween morning, Burke was taking his usual morning whisky in his local tavern when an old woman entered and began talking with the patrons. Noticing that she had an Irish accent, Burke bought her a dram and she sat down and said that she was Mary Docherty from Innisowen. Burke said that his own mother was a Docherty from Innisowen, and that they must be related. Having established this bond, he easily persuaded the old woman to come to his house.
The visitor was warmly received by Helen and by a couple, James and Ann Gray, who were lodging with Burke and Helen. Burke convinced Docherty to stay overnight with them, and arranged for the Grays to spend that night at the Hares’ lodging house.
The arrangements being settled, everyone drank in celebration of Halloween, and the whisky flowed long past nightfall. The Grays eventually left, but were told to return for breakfast the next morning.
The festivities continued and neighbors later claimed to have heard dancing and drinking and arguments coming from Burke and Helen’s rooms. Around midnight, an upstairs neighbor was passing by Burke and Helen’s door and heard two men arguing and a woman’s voice calling out “Murder!” and “Get the police, there is murder here!” The man ran back into the street but could not find a policeman. Passing by the door again, the man stopped but heard nothing, so he assumed the crisis was over and went up to his own rooms.
The following morning, the Grays returned and found Mary Docherty was gone. They asked after her and Helen told them that she threw the old lady out for being “overly friendly” with Burke. Ann Gray later went near the spare bed to get some socks she had left behind, but Burke shouted at her to stay away from the bed. Burke yelled at her a second time when she went near the bed in order to fetch some potatoes. In the early evening, the Grays found themselves momentarily alone in the house, so Ann Gray took a peek and saw the body of an old woman lying beneath the bed. Both Grays bolted from the house, running into the returning Helen, who asked where they were going. James Gray was outraged and asked Helen what she knew about the body. Helen panicked and begged them not to say anything, claiming that their silence would be worth £10 a week. This further incensed the Grays, and James chastised Helen for “bringing disgrace upon her family” and the couple went out to fetch a policeman. - Tru TV
The imagery of Halloween is derived from many sources, including national customs, works of Gothic and horror literature (such as the novels Frankenstein and Dracula), and classic horror films (such as Frankenstein and The Mummy). Among the earliest works on the subject of Halloween is from Scottish poet John Mayne in 1780, who made note of pranks at Halloween; "What fearful' pranks ensue!", as well as the supernatural associated with the night, "Bogies" (ghosts), influencing Robert Burns' Halloween 1785. Elements of the autumn season, such as pumpkins, corn husks, and scarecrows, are also prevalent. Homes are often decorated with these types of symbols around Halloween. Halloween imagery includes themes of death, evil, the occult, or mythical monsters. - Wikipedia
